Synopsis
“I am Sindhutai Sapkal” is an inspiring, rooted, feminist, Indian film, tracing the true story of Sindhutai Sapkal, who rewrote her destiny. Born into a poor family, Sindhutai is abandoned by her husband on false accusations of infidelity. She sets out on a journey towards justice and dignity, setting up orphanages for the abandoned. When her ageing husband turns up at the orphanage, she “adopts” him. The film is told in flashback, as Sindhutai goes to San Jose, USA, to give fund-raising speeches. The film’s deep humanism in the face of injustice and humiliation gives it a universal resonance.
The cinematography has a deep empathy for the rural Indian landscape and ambience, and the film is elevated by Marathi poetry.
